Sam had her eyes closed and her hands clenched for the entire journey; but thanks to the taxi-driver’s constant narrative, she hadn’t missed a beat of the hazardous journey. Justin had told her it was a stone’s throw from the local train station, but the “stone” turned out to be a hill – and one that was almost impossible to climb. The hum of Christmas songs from the intermittent radio added nothing to the scene. When she finally opened her eyes, Sam felt like she’d been beamed onto another planet, one with nothing but snow-covered hills, and a darkness that stuck to her throat like treacle; the sky didn’t seem to be the colour of mud, it was mud.

‘Welcome to Wales.’ The taxi driver chuckled.

Sam gulped. ‘Right,’ was all she could think of saying. She scrambled in her purse for a tip.

‘The village centre is over there.’ He pointed into the distance, past a grim field where a single yellow light quivered. ‘I’ll take your things to the castle, but I can’t drive you there because the bridge is closed.’

‘Closed?’ Sam stammered, wondering how a bridge could be closed on Christmas Eve. The taxi driver nodded, making the briefest of eye contact in the rear-view mirror. ‘Digger’s going to pick you up.’

‘A digger?’ Sam’s mind desperately tried to keep up with all these changes, but failed spectacularly. ‘A digger is taking me to the event?’ She sighed. ‘And are you still collecting me from the hotel on …?’

She wasn’t certain of anything anymore; she still didn’t really know why she was here or what the event was. Justin had been irritatingly vague about it all. Her heart sank at the thought of how desperate he’d been to get her out of the way.

‘I’m collecting you on Boxing Day. I’ve got another appointment, so I’m going to have to let you out now. Digger should be here soon.’ The taxi driver turned to her, his face creased into an unconvincing attempt at a sympathetic smile. Sam looked out of the window. Even the trees were shivering. ‘It’s only a couple of fields to the village hall. You’ll be there in no time. If Digger doesn’t show, start walking.’

Sam’s cheeks burned. Had he suggested walking? In these boots? If she’d known she was walking hills, she wouldn’t have worn her best designer boots.

‘So, I’m going down there, where that light is?’ she gulped.

‘That’s right. It’s just down the hill and over the field.’

‘Down the hill?’ A wave of panic flushed through her. ‘Can’t you drive me to the bottom of it?’ She pleaded. ‘Can’t I get to the castle and then go to the village hall?’

‘Wrong direction, I’m afraid. It’s a maze down there, but the bridge will be open again after the show.’

The blood rushed to her ears, and a determination to show him she didn’t need his help, or anyone else’s, gripped Sam. What type of place had Justin dragged her to and what did he mean by “show”? She’d
